Renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, and activist Onyeka Onwenu has reportedly passed away.
The news broke late Tuesday night following an incident at a birthday party for Mrs. Stella Okoli.
According to eyewitnesses, Onwenu, who had performed at the event, collapsed shortly after and was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she unfortunately did not survive.
Onwenu, born January 31, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, was a celebrated figure in Nigerian music and culture, known as the “Elegant Stallion.”
Her extensive career includes iconic songs such as “Wait for Me,” which she performed alongside King Sunny Ade. Her musical achievements were complemented by her roles in film, politics, and advocacy.
She served as Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and later as Executive Director of the National Centre for Women Development.
In addition to her artistic contributions, Onwenu was a prominent human rights activist and a dedicated advocate for women and children’s rights.
The family has yet to issue an official statement confirming the news.
