Mortuary officials and Pathologists at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, have pleaded with the State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, to lift the burial ban in the state, saying the hospital morgue can no longer admit new corpses.
They also said the issue of over congestion of the number of corpses deposited in the morgue is uncontrollable.
The Management of the FMC, however, called on the governor to relax the executive order restraining burials to check the spread of the coronavirus in the state and allow the dead to be buried by their families.
The Consultant Pathologist at the FMC morgue in Yenagoa, Dr. Alawode Kehinde, made this known on Thursday during an interactive session with media practitioners in the state.
He also said there are foreseeable hiccups if nothing is done to evacuate the corpses from the morgue between now and June.
According to him, “the situation may become very difficult for them to manage and also for those burying because after then, the rains will be heavier which is usually not too okay for burials.”
Mr. Kehinde, said given the anticipated difficulty, a letter had in the past week been sent to the Governor of the state, Douye Diri to grant those with corpses in the morgue permission to evacuate them for burial and that hopefully if the request is granted, such burials will be done under strict compliance to social distancing rules.
