The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 20 diverted transit containers valued at ₦769.5 million in the Kano/Jigawa area.
The seizure is part of a major crackdown on cargo diversion and economic sabotage.
Customs Comptroller-General, Bashir Adeniyi, announced the operation, vowing there is “no safe haven for economic saboteurs” who threaten national revenue and security.
The seized goods, with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦769,533,666, include vitrified tiles, diesel engine oil, fabrics, used clothing, medical supplies, and Zamzam water. Many items violated Common External Tariff (CET) regulations.
Adeniyi confirmed one offender, Abdulrahman Sani Adam, was convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment or a ₦3 million fine.
Two containers of medical consumables were forfeited to the Federal Government.
To combat smuggling and diversion, the NCS is deploying electronic container tracking devices nationwide for real-time monitoring from ports to final destinations.
The Nigeria Customs Service urges importers and agents to follow lawful transit procedures and report suspicious activities, warning that violations lead to prosecution, forfeiture, and loss of trading privileges.
