The closure of borders between European countries as a result of the coronavirus pandemic must be avoided as much as possible, French junior European affairs minister Clement Beaune said Wednesday.

He added that, instead of blanket travel bans to European countries, France will have travel advisories on regions where the coronavirus is resurgent.

“Hard border closures should be avoided as much as possible within Europe and the Schengen zone. We are trying to target clusters without disproportionate measures”, Beaune said.

The United Kingdom has earlier imposed a 14-day quarantine for all travellers returning from Spain, where the infection rate tripled in recent weeks.

French authorities put out a strong recommendation advising against travel to Catalonia. “But it is not a measure that applies to all of Spain”, Beaune stressed.

Germany has also issued a travel warning for three regions in Spain.
