Speaking at the press briefing, Comptroller Shuaibu emphasized the importance of the Joint Border Patrol in preventing smuggling and tackling other criminal activities that pose serious threats to our national and economic security.
These criminal acts have far-reaching consequences, including compromising national security through the illegal movement of items like drugs, weapons, and human trafficking across our international borders.
Additionally, they have detrimental effects on the economy by reducing the nation’s revenue through tax evasion and duty depletion.
In line with our commitment to combat smuggling and trans-border crimes, we successfully intercepted goods that violated sections of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and the Federal Government’s Import and Export Guidelines.
The total duty paid value (DPV) of these intercepted goods amounted to an impressive One Billion, One Hundred and Twenty-Eight Million, Six Hundred and Eighty-Four Thousand, Nine Hundred Naira (₦1,128,684,900).
We successfully intercepted a significant amount of goods across the borders of the six states of the South-West Geo-political zone and made some arrests in connection with these seizures.
The goods were seized and are currently deposited at Seme, Ogun I, Ogun II, Oyo/Osun, and Ondo Ekiti Area Commands Government Warehouses.
The intercepted items include foreign parboiled rice, premium motor spirit, frozen poultry products, used tyres, cannabis sativa, cars, and various means of conveyance.
The total DPV of the seized goods amounts to N1,128,684,900.
Additionally, the Nigeria Immigration Service played a critical role as part of the Joint Border Patrol Team, leading to the interception of 30 illegal immigrants who are suspected of violating immigration laws.
They have been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and prosecution.
The Sector has successfully recovered a substantial sum of Eleven Million, Five Hundred and Ninety-Three Thousand, Two Hundred and Seventeen Naira (₦11,593,217) in revenue from the issuance of Debit Notes (DN) for vehicles and other goods that were improperly imported into the country.
Today, Joint Border Patrol Team is proud to present a total of One Thousand Four Hundred and Ten (1,410) Jerry cans of PMS (30litres) each, which were seized from various locations within our Area of Responsibility.
These seizures were made possible through the diligent patrol efforts of our dedicated officers and men within just one week.
It’s important to note that this display represents only a fraction of the PMS seized by the Sector, with many others being deposited and auctioned in other Government Warehouses within the Zone.
