India’s coronavirus cases crossed the million mark as authorities struggle to curb the spread of the pandemic.

In just 3 days after crossing 900,000, the health ministry reported 1,003,382 infections with 25,602 deaths after a record increase of 687. The infections topped 900,000 3 days after crossing the 800,000 mark.

India is the third nation to hit a million cases after the United States and Brazil. The country is home to some of the planet’s most densely populated cities.

Local authorities in nearly a dozen states have reimposed a partial lockdown in areas that are considered high-risk. The restrictions had only been lifted recently.

The main hotspots have been located in Mumbai and New Delhi, but recently infections have spiked in smaller cities and rural areas.

A two-week lockdown starting Thursday has been imposed in Bihar, a state with 128 million people. The government has also ordered a week-long lockdown in Bangalore.  Goa on Thursday imposed a three-day shutdown and a night-time curfew until August 10.

The city of Pune and other states, including Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Assam, have also introduced new restrictions.
