“Kathy Lueders has been selected to lead @NASA’s Human Exploration & Operations Mission Directorate. Kathy has successfully managed both the Commercial Crew & Commercial Cargo programs and is the right person to lead HEO as we prepare to send astronauts to the Moon in 2024”, administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted.
The appointment comes as NASA prepares to return humans to the moon in 2024 under the Trump administration’s space policy.
“If you’re asking me if we’re going to land on the moon in 2024, I’m going to tell you, yes, we can do it. We know it’s hard. We know that there’s bound to be challenges in front of us. But it is absolutely possible, and we’re going to work towards it every day”, Lueders said.
The agency originally planned to return to the moon with astronaut landings in 2028, but the Trump administration moved the target up to 2024.
