In a landmark move for Nigeria’s media and telecommunications sectors, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) have joined forces to oversee a seamless transition to digital broadcasting.
The collaboration, revealed at a joint press conference in Abuja, marks a significant development in enhancing broadcast services nationwide.
Charles Ebuebu, NBC Director General, emphasized the partnership as a crucial step in the DSO project, highlighting the President’s approval of a grant aimed at advancing technological innovation and economic growth. Ebuebu stated, “This intervention reflects the President’s visionary leadership and our commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian has access to superior broadband services and is included in the digital economy.
The funds will be carefully utilized to ensure that all aspects of the DSO ecosystem deliver substantial benefits.”
Ebuebu described the DSO project as transformative, predicting it would drive job creation, economic expansion, and elevate the media industry.
He also announced an extensive awareness campaign to educate the public on new regulations and the benefits of the DSO.
NBC plans to establish content production studios across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones in collaboration with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and FreeTV APP.
This initiative includes developing a mobile app for FreeTV, allowing users to stream content and access video-on-demand services.
Dr. Aminu Maida, NCC Executive Vice Chairman, emphasized the importance of adapting to changing content consumption habits.
“We must align with the fact that most content will be consumed on demand and in real time.
Our role is to ensure that data consumption is supported by maintaining high-quality connections and efficient internal data management.”
The NBC and NCC’s joint effort aims to create a more inclusive, technologically advanced media landscape, poised to deliver significant digital dividends for Nigeria.
