The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced a final deadline for the mandatory linkage of Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) to National Identity Numbers (NINs) as part of the Federal Government’s 2020 policy.
As of now, over 153 million SIMs have been successfully linked to NINs, marking a compliance rate of 96%, up from 69.7% in January 2024.
In the final phase of this initiative, the NCC is urging all Nigerians to ensure their SIMs are linked to NINs by September 14, 2024.
This policy is crucial for enhancing digital security and trust, reducing fraud and cybercrime, and fostering greater participation in e-commerce, digital banking, and mobile money services.
The NCC, in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has discovered cases where individuals held an excessive number of SIM cards—some with over 100,000.
The Commission is also intensifying efforts to combat the sale of pre-registered SIMs, in partnership with security agencies and other stakeholders.
From September 15, 2024, all SIMs operating in Nigeria must be linked to a valid NIN.
The NCC advises those who have not yet completed the linkage or have encountered verification issues to visit their service providers or use approved self-service portals before the deadline.
Additionally, the NCC reminds the public that the sale and purchase of pre-registered SIMs are criminal offenses, punishable by imprisonment and fines.
Citizens are encouraged to report such activities to the Commission via its toll-free line (622) or social media platforms.
The NCC appreciates the ongoing cooperation of the public as it works to strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.
