Iran on Tuesday said a former defence ministry worker convicted of selling information to the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has been executed last week.
Judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili said that Reza Asgari had worked in the aerospace department of the defence ministry and retired four years ago. During his last years serving at the ministry, Asgari sold information about Iran’s missile program to the CIA, Esmaili said.
“In the last years of his service, he joined the CIA. He sold information about our missiles to the CIA and took money from them. He was identified, tried and sentenced to death”.
Esmaili also said a death sentence will be carried out for Mahmud Musavi-Majd, an Iranian accused of spying for the US and Israel. He was convicted on passing on information about the whereabouts of Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, who was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq in January.
