On Monday, Austria broke ground on a new memorial for the 65,000 Austrian Jews killed by the Nazis during World War II.

The “Memorial to the Jewish Children, Women and Men of Austria who were Murdered in the Shoah”, located in Vienna’s central Ostarrichi Park, is set to be completed by next spring, AFP reported.

“For all Austrians, the memorial should offer a quiet place, in which they can remember the fate of their Jewish fellow citizens and honor their lives, today and in future generations,” the organisers say in their website.

It will be made of large slabs, where the names of the 64,000 known Jewish victims and the 1,000 whose names have been lost will be inscribed.

The memorial will be almost entirely funded by the Austrian government, with the construction cost estimated around €5.3 million.

“We cannot undo the Holocaust – there is no gesture with which we can make amends, but we can make a gesture of remembrance,” said Wolfgang Sobotka, National Council President, who is also serving as president of the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism.
