The Tin Can Port Management has demonstrated it’s commitment to giving back to the community through a comprehensive corporate social responsibility program focusing on supporting local schools.
As part of this initiative, the Tin Can Port Management on Wednesday 22nd May, 2024 went to “Ogogoro Island” across the channel and donated educational resources, including exercise books, bags, umbrellas, to the pupils and students in the community.
The five beneficiary schools are Tomaro Junior Secondary School, Tomaro Senior Secondary School, Itun Agan Junior Community School, Itun Agan Community Nursery and Primary School and Local Authority Nursery and Primary School.
Speaking during the presentation of the items, the Tin Can Port Manager, Mr. Sylvester Otukhe Egede, urged the pupils and students to be humble and maintain a quiet disposition to life in order to acquire knowledge that will empower them in the future.
“We recognize the importance of investing in our community’s future”, said Mr. Egede.
He told them that with proper dedication and focus, any of them could be where he is today and urged then to shun anti-social vices and criminality.
He prayed for God to guide all of them while living a life of obedience to their parents.
“By supporting local schools, we aim to make a positive impact on the lives of the young people and contribute to the development of the community”, said the Port Manager.
In his response, the Head Teacher of Itun Agan Community Nursery and Primary School, Mr. Oladuso Olakunle, thanked the management of Tin Can Port for the gesture, noting that the school administrators, teachers and students were grateful for this initiative.
He said this was the first time in more than 20 years that any such gesture had been extended to the schools in the community and thanked the Tin Can Port management for the exercise.
Also speaking at the event which brought together an assemblage of more than 500 students, the Baale of Itun Agan Community, High Chief Akinyemi Ikuesan, thanked the NPA MD, Mohammed Bello Koko for approving the CSR and commended the management of Tin Can Port for the initiative and for bringing smiles to the faces of the children in the community.
He urged the students to make judicious use of the items donated to them.
Also speaking on the sidelines, a teacher from Local Authority Nursery and Primary School, Mr. Ogunmefun T. Adebayo said
“the donation of resources and mentorship program have significantly enhanced our student’s learning experience.
“We are thankful for the port authority’s commitment to our community”.
The CSR initiative has received tremendous appreciation from the teachers and students who expressed gratitude for the support.
The Tin Can Port Management CSR program demonstrates it’s dedication to being a corporate citizen and valued partner in the community.
By investing in education, they are helping to build a bright future for generations to come.
Recall that the Ogogoro Island, now a thriving community metamorphosed soon after the Maroko Settlement was demolished by government in 1989 to make way for the Lekki Phase 1 housing development.
The displaced residents of Maroko and Tarkwa Bay found a new home in Ogogoro Island.
Today, it is a sprawling ghetto without access road and electricity. The only access to this jungle is by boats and canoes.
Scores of young people including Youth Corpers say they prefer to live there because the rents are cheap and affordable.
