Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a trailblazer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), clarified a statement attributed to him on Permanent Voter Cards last night (PVC).
He urged a delegation of women from across the country attending the APC Women Conference last night to check the status of their voter cards and mobilize supporters to vote, but he used the word ‘expire’ rather than stating that the cards may need to be updated.
“Immediately upon being apprised of this, Asiwaju apologised for the incorrect statement and felt sorry for any confusion it may have caused,” said Tinubu’s media adviser, Mr. Tunde Rahman.
“Tinubu also stated that he appreciates INEC and its personnel’s patriotic and necessary work in ensuring a free and fair electoral process for all Nigerians of all political parties.”
At the meeting called at the request of the women, Asiwaju emphasized the importance of people fully participating in elections in order to strengthen our democracy. He urged them to continue mobilizing voters to update their PVCs and help combat voter apathy.
“Women must mobilize in large numbers to reverse the trend.” There was a significant disparity between those who registered for elections and those who usually showed up to pick up their PVCs. This is a serious challenge that may stifle the growth of our democracy.
“Tinubu would like to reiterate this call to women to mobilize at the grassroots level so that elections reflect the sovereign will of all people and a true democracy is established.”
“He encourages them to review their voting information with INEC so that it can be updated before the upcoming elections.”
