The United Kingdom will impose a quarantine on arrivals from Belgium after a rise in coronavirus cases, local media reported.

In recent weeks, there was a daily average of 292 new cases in Belgium. Last week, they averaged 491, an increase of about 68%. The country also saw an average of 2.7 deaths per day last week, up by about 30% from the previous week.

“We keep the data for all countries and territories under constant review and publish a weekly update on www.gov.uk to update passengers if significant changes in the incidence of COVID-19 are identified”, the UK transport ministry said.

Belgium health officials have said the country was already going through a new wave of the pandemic: “We may be at the beginning of a new wave, but for now the numbers are not so high, even if they are worrying, and if we do nothing, we will obviously head into a new wave”.

Britain has also recently imposed a 14-day quarantine on travellers from Spain and Luxembourg.
