William Troost-Ekong, the stand-in captain of the Super Eagles, has been honored as the Best Player of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by the Confederation of African Football.

Despite Nigeria’s loss in the final against Cote d’Ivoire, Troost-Ekong displayed an exceptional performance throughout the tournament, earning him the prestigious Man of the Tournament award.

Notably, his goal tally at AFCON 2023 has made him the highest-scoring defender in the competition’s history, with an impressive total of five goals.

While Troost-Ekong’s achievement took the spotlight, Emilio Nsue from Equatorial Guinea emerged as the tournament’s top scorer. Ronwen Williams from South Africa was named the Best Goalkeeper, surpassing Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali, who conceded twice against Cote d’Ivoire but managed to keep four clean sheets at the AFCON, one less than Williams.
